CarScan

Point the camera at a number plate; the app reads it locally and looks the vehicle up with DVLA.

Overview

My latest app CarScan allows users to simply look up vehicle information, save vehicle scans, share vehicle scans and their locations

Purpose

Read a UK number plate in-browser and look the vehicle up with DVLA.

How it works

The rear camera (or a manual registration field) captures a plate. OCR runs locally, validates format, then calls DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Service. Results can be saved and shared with location. It is a lookup tool, not an enforcement ANPR system.

Architecture

  • Next.js web app
  • In-browser OCR for plates
  • DVLA VES lookup
  • Supabase for saved scans when enabled

What you can do

  • Frame a plate or type a registration
  • Confirm OCR’d text before lookup
  • View DVLA vehicle data
  • Save or share a scan with location

Data & access

Saved scans belong to the product user/session. DVLA is queried with the registration only.
